What are Traineeships?

A traineeship is an opportunity for someone to work full-time or part-time whilst undertaking structured training to achieve a Nationally Recognised Qualification.

A traineeship is office based qualifications where the trainee is trained in a vocational area like office administration. Traineeships vary in length from twelve months to two years.

At the beginning of the traineeship, the trainee and employer will sign a Training Contract that is registered with the Queensland Department of Employment & Training. By signing this contract the trainee and Employer agree to uphold certain roles and responsibilities to be followed under this program.  A structured Training Plan will be developed with all parties for the trainee.

School Based Traineeships?

Sarina Russo Institute also supports training for secondary school students undertaking a school based traineeship. School-Based traineeships allow year 11 and 12 students to achieve a Senior Certificate while working and training in an industry field  to achieve a Nationally Recognised Qualification.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) provide a pathway for high schools students who have successfully completed Year 10 to gain employment with an employer, while also training towards a recognised qualification during high school.

If students complete their traineeship while still at high school, they could receive both a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) as well as a vocational certificate in their chosen trade or industry.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships offer the following career benefits:

  • Earn money while training on the job
  • Provides greater variety and flexibility in the senior schooling experience
  • Apply knowledge learnt at school in a real work environment
  • Provides a training head start when graduating from high school
  • Offers work experience and career insight into potential careers and workplaces before deciding to enter a trade full-time
  • Provides a nationally recognised qualification in a Certificate II or III or higher qualification recognised by the industry and employer

How to begin a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship

Step 1: Get permission from either your parents or guardians, and then let your high school know of your intention to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship so we can ensure the apprenticeship or traineeship is compatible with your current studies.

Step 2: Once your intention to study a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship has been confirmed,we will then contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC). The employer who will accept a school-based apprentice or trainee will then begin the training contract sign-up process with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC). The sign-up process is generally performed by the employer.  The AAC should also be aware of the Sarina Russo Institute policy regarding School Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships.

Step 3: An AAC will organise and conduct the signing of the contract. This requires the consent of parents and the school so that the ACC can proceed with the signing of the training contract.

Step 4: After the contract has been signed by the employer and the apprentice or trainee, the AAC will formally notify a selected Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO.) They will develop a training program with the employer to determine the schedule, and confirm and document the agreed timetable of school, training and employment.

Step 5: The training contract will be registered by the ACC with the Queensland Department of Education and Training and the energy industry organisations for approval. Once the training contract is approved by the Department and the energy industry organisations, the apprentice or trainee and the parent or guardian will receive a copy of the approval letter.
